Multi Camera Formats

Sports
The Royal Rumble 2008

Practical Reasons

For the sport genre I chose the world wrestling entertainment royal rumble 2008.  This is a special moment considered for many wrestling fans as it marks the return of the wrestling superstar John Cena. The wrestling show is a fast pace action themed therefore it is important to have many cameras in order to be able to get all the shots of the action in the stadium.  This is well planned out through the media technique known as multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous). The use of multiple cameras enables viewers to see the entire action, including the reaction of the wrestlers, referee as well as the audience. By having lots of cameras the cameramen can cut to show the crowds reaction of a superstar wining the royal rumble match such as at 1:38. The advantages of multiple cameras are that the audiences get a better view of the action and it makes the show flow smoothly. However multiple cameras means more money is being used. Another technique used is coverage of action, which enable viewers to see the full view of the arena as well as close ups of the wrestlers.  This is shown at 1:18 – 1:21 where one wrestler throws another wrestler over the ropes and then cuts to another scene of the wrestler on the floor.

Aesthetic reasons
In this clip the visual style and mode of address  is aggressive especially when a superstar returns from injury. This is shown at  0:33-0:52 as John Cena enters the arena, the audience is getting excited and going wild while the other wrestler is starring at him angrily.  This creates a tense violent vibe for the audience by cutting to the wrestlers both in long shots and close ups to show their angry expressions. Multi camera filming also means the producer can communicate  meaning to the viewer. In this clip they do this  by having a wrestler coming out to the ring and showing off to the audience and then cutting  to another shot of a wrestler who is  looking at him in disbelief and  disgust.  This connotes the two wrestlers have a deep dislike for each other and that the wrestling match could get violent at 0:34-0:38.

Concerts
Brits Awards 2013

Practical Reasons
The multi-camera concert that I have chosen is Justin Timberlake who is performing his smash hit song 'Mirrors' at the Brits awards. This is a prestigious event which attracts famous musicians therefore it is vital for the concert to run as planned. One way for this is using the technique coverage of action which displays the entire view of the concert which includes the artist, the artist's band as well as the audience members. Another practical technique of the concert is multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action(live and spontaneous).  An example of this is at 0:41-0:45 which shows a close up of the artist therefore reflecting his emotions to the audience. However at 0:05-0:19 there are different views of the curtain in the arena which builds up tension and excitement as the audience know that the singer is hidden behind the curtain.  After there is a long shot of the artist walking towards the main stage and then a shot of the audience at 0:25-0:31. This keeps the viewers more entertain and makes them feel as if they are at the concert. The advantages of these techniques is that they record the entire arena and are able to get various types of shots such long shots, medium shots and close ups. The disadvantages are that the cameramen must be trained and well skilled to perform the various types of camera angles.

Aesthetic Reasons
The concert performance video consist of visual style & mode of address when using multi-camera for his back-up musicians and also has different camera angles from each direction the feeling of the concert has a upbeat  by having lots of different camera shots of Justin Timberlake with his back-up musicians. For example, a low angle is displayed at 2:04 which shows the entire band along with the main performer Justin Timberlake and an over the shoulder shot at 2:33 which shows the the back-up musicians playing the instruments. Another multi-camera technique is maintaining viewer interest, this music video clip shows the main artist by having different shots as the main artist is performing at 2:30. All these techniques help enhance the viewer's pleasure.

Public events

Fifa World Cup 2014 opening ceremony

Practical Reasons
The public event I have chosen is the Fifa World Cup 2014 opening ceremony hosted in Brazil. The World Cup is viewed as one of the biggest sporting event in the world. It occurs every 4 years. At 0:00 the multi-camera technique that is being used is coverage of action as the camera shows the full view of the Arena De Sao Paulo stadium along with the audience.Another camera technique applied was multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous) where the intersection between many cameras are easy on the eyes of the viewers. An example of this is at 1:15 where the camera zooms in on the performers at 1:46 multiple cameras cut from one performer to another performer. The advantage of using this technique is that the audience get a more persuade feel of the public event as the camera close up at the performers however simultaneously the audience is missing out on the view of the whole event.

Aesthetic Reasons
Without the use of multi-cameras the audience would not be able to see any close up shots of the performers. Instead they would see an extreme long shot of the football stadium and would struggle to see the performers.Another multi-camera technique used was visual style & mode of address which is to help the audience share the same emotions of that in the public event. At 0:54 we see a view of the crowd cheering and showing their excitement as the World Cup ceremony is initialed. The theme of the World Cup ceremony was diversity which plays a huge role on Maintaining viewer interest. It does this by showing 32 different languages at 0:15-0:40 and the audience feels involved in the performance.

Games Show
Who Want To Be A Millionaire

Practical Reasons
The clip I have chosen of a game show is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. It uses constraints of studio or location environment as the game show is hosted in a studio and multiple cameras are used to ensure the games show is displayed smoothly. There are various close up of the presenter and the contestant such as at 1:27 to show their emotions and help the audience understand how the contestant is thinking and feeling.A different technique used is  multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous)action which helps to keep the viewers interested. the fact that the camera angle go back and forth between the presenter and the contestant shows their  formal relationship between 1:04-1:09.

Aesthetic Reasons
The stage of the games show is well protracted to the audience at 1:31 where the viewers can see how many questions the contestant must answer correctly in order to win this technique is know as communicating meaning to the viewer. This is well communicated to the audience to feel like they are a contestant themselves which in turn creates excitement and is more likely to maintain their interest. The game show  maintaining viewer interest has a lot of ranges of camera angles for example having a low angle shot at 0:45.The disadvantage includes the use of multiple cameras which will cost more money than a single camera.

Chat Show

Jimmy Kimmel Live and Jaime Foxx explains why he called his album Hollywood.

Practical Reasons
The clip that I have chosen for the chat show is Jimmy Kimmel Live. The show is about Jimmy Kimmel who interviews celebrities and gets their opinions over particular issues.  The show contain elements of humor in order to get the guest and audience more relaxed, particularly for the guest to open up to the presenter. The multi-camera technique that is used for the chat show is  multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous). There are lots of shots of the presenter and the guest. The camera  zooms into the display of the album cover that Jamie Foxx is trying to promote at 0:00-0:04. Another multi-camera technique that is in this video is constraints of studio or location environment as the chat show is held in a studio that has multi-cameras to make sure the chat show is displayed clearly. The advantages of these techniques are that there are clear view of the guest, presenter and the audience members. Also it is easy to know which type of angle to choose since the show is planned and therefore the camera will go back and forth to the presenter and the guest.

Aesthetic Reasons
Without the use of multi-cameras, the audience would not be able to see any close up shots of the presenter and the guest. The technique was use is known as maintaining viewer interest which is about maximising the viewer's entertainment so they will keep watching the show. By having lots of camera shots, for example at 0:01 this chat show video having a long shots in this chat show video and also having lots of close ups from the presenter and the guest to show the audience that the guest is promoting his new album and whats it all about. Another technique that the chat show video has visual style & mode of address, this shows a guest who is promoting his new album and talking about why his album is called 'Hollywood' and this helps the audience to acknowledge when the album is going to be released. Furthermore a positive experience of watching the show is more likely for the audience members to buy the album by making the chat show more excited for the viewer that are watching.

Magazine Shows
The One Show Will Smith and his family

Practical Reasons
A magazine show that I have chosen is The One Show. The multi-camera technique that the magazine show uses is known as coverage of action which is designed to display the full view of the studio of the magazine show. By having long shots of the presenters at 0:00 and also having close us of all the guest that are on the magazine show from 0:20 to 0:21, this is shown by getting the reaction of the guest opinions that are being asked questions by the presenters. Another multi camera technique that is in this magazine show  is  constraints of studio or location environment. The purpose of this technique is  for the multi-cameras to make sure the magazine show is displayed clearly for the audience and the viewers watching at home.

Aesthetic Reasons
In this magazine show the multi-camera that is being used is the visual style & mode of address. The use of multi-camera help because this magazine show has  to cut from the studio of where the guests and presenters are to another scene of where there is a group of people singing the Will Smith's 'Summertime' song at 2:16-2:17. This  keeps the audience interested in the show  and want to participate to the song this set a mood to the viewers that are watching at home by having more than one camera helps the audience to see the full view of the studio. Another multi-camera technique that is in the magazine show is maintaining viewer interest. This is shown by having  lots of  different shots of the guest and the presenters and also the music group at which in turn makes them feel that they are the main part of the magazine show.

Talent Show
Britain's Got Talent Darcy Oake Semi-Final

Practical Reasons
A talent show that I have chosen is Britain's Got Talent. This show is about people in Britain expressing their talents in front of 4 judges and a group of audience. The show holds many themes from comical to dramatic depending on the act. The multi-camera technique is coverage of action in this talent show video by having the full view of the studio of where the talent show Britain's Got Talent. Also it has a clear view of the stage and a medium shot of the presenters at 0:07. Another multi-camera technique is multi-camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous). This is portrayed through the action of when the camera is zooming in and out of the talent show presenters to introduce the upcoming act on the semi-finals of the show at 0:25. The various camera shots ensures that the talent show is displayed clearly for the audience that are watching live. The advantages of multiple camera is that it can be used to build up suspense, particularly when a judge is making a decision to allow the performer go to the next stage or not.

Aesthetic Reasons
In this talent show the multi-camera technique that is being used is visual style & mode of address. By showing the audience a clip of the up-coming act and what he is doing on the talent show at 0:30 of the magician starts his acts and then multi-camera cutting to another scene. The talent show also displays a clip that the act that he done when he first performed his magician act and impressed the judges. Another multi-camera technique that the talent show has is Maintaining viewer interest the act showing his new performing and is focused on impress the judges and the audience at home that no other act has done before and showing a new trick that he has done before the talent show video clip has long shot of the act performing his trick to show the audience at 2:51 to make this talent show more interesting by having different camera shot for example having a medium shot and long shot to enhance the mood of the audience.
